Should Shannon Sharpe and Skip Bayless Part Ways after Damar Hamlin Tweet?

The show Undisputed with Shannon Sharpe and Skip Bayless will never be the same. During a live show Skip Bayless had to do the show by himself. Why was Shannon Sharpe absent from the show? Shannon Sharpe did not like Skip Bayless' tweet about how the NFL handled canceling the game after Damar Hamlin almost lost his life on Monday Night Football.

Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe had a heated exchange on their Fox Sports 1 show recently. Sharpe was going through a monologue about why a tweet that Bayless sent about Damar Hamlin offended him and should be taken down. Bayless interrupted, stating that he would not take it down, and Sharpe immediately stopped talking, in frustration. Sharpe then told the producers to move on to the next topic.

Many people began to notice the negative exchanges between the two hosts a few weeks prior when Shannon Sharpe talked about Tom Brady's disappointing play on the field. Skip Bayless started to defend Tom Brady by disrespecting Shannon Sharpe’s hall of fame career.

Marcelles Wiley, a former Fox Sports 1 colleague of the duo, weighed in on the matter on Instagram.

"You hate to see it: Skip and Shannon breaking up on live TV, every single day,” Wiley said. “When your partner can’t get through his monologue, it’s all bad.” - Wiley

"Reminds me of a Wiley-ism: Any relationship that ends, you spend half your time breaking up,” he continued. “What we’re witnessing right now, on live TV, is them breaking up. You could tell they don’t even speak outside the building, outside the show. Want to know how I know? We all saw it. Felt like an ambush to Skip.” - Wiley

The topic is trending on social media, with most people stating that Shannon Sharpe should part ways from the show. Sharpe has a very successful YouTube show called Club Shay Shay. Skip Bayless has his own YouTube channel as well but it is not as popular as Shannon Sharpe's channel.

While every company is different, almost 50% of business partnerships break up within 4 years of formation. The average marriage lasts a mere 7 to 8 years according to the Weinman law firm. Here are a few notable business break ups.

  • Facebook Eduardo Saverin and Mark Zuckerberg:

Anyone who has seen the movie entitled The Social Network, knows one side of this split. Saverin and Zuckerberg founded Facebook together. Disputes over company direction and Saverin's lack of commitment led to a messy partnership. Saverin was reportedly a lousy, absent co-founder who gallivanted around New York while Facebook was taking off in Silicon Valley. These disagreements led Zuckerberg to reduce Saverin's shares in Facebook.

  • The Beatles:

When The Beatles began to dissolve, it was largely due to business conflicts within the company they founded, Apple Corps. The Beatles officially broke up amidst an array of legal conflicts, suing not not only their business managers, but other band members as well. McCartney filed a lawsuit against Lennon, Harrison, and Starr in 1970. Three years later, Lennon, Harrison, and Starr sued their manager, Klein.

  • Clive Davis and David Wynshaw - CBS Records:

Both Davis, then CEO, and Wynshaw, then Director of Artist Relations, were let go after it was discovered that Davis had used CBS funds to pay for his personal life, including a bar mitzvah party for his son.

The partners worked well together to lead CBS on a successful run, but it turns out they were engaging in illegal activity. Wynshaw had been a wingman for Davis, covering up many of his shady expenses.

  • Frank McCourt and Jamie McCourt - LA Dodgers:

Marriage partnership is one thing; business partnership is another. Imagine when the breakup of one of these leads to the breakup of another. Frank and Jamie McCourt are dealing with that reality, as they head towards a messy divorce. Jamie was the first female CEO of a MLB team. After 30 years of marriage, Frank and Jamie decided to separate, and in 2009, right after the Dodgers were eliminated from the playoffs, Jamie was fired from her position. The next day, she filed for divorce.

The current legal dispute is over ownership of the Dodgers. Is the team community property (owned 50% by Jamie) or separate property (owned 100% by Frank)? Frank insists he is the sole owner. To further mix business and personal affairs, he also accuses Jamie of cheating on him with her bodyguard.

  • Jay Z, Dame Dash and Biggs Roc-A-fella - Records:

Roc-A-Fella Records was an American hip hop record label and music management company founded by record executives and entrepreneurs Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter, Damon "Dame" Dash, and Kareem "Biggs" Burke in 1994. The infamous 'split' between Dash, Carter, and Burke occurred when it was revealed the trio had sold their 50% interest in Roc-A-Fella to The Island Def Jam Music Group, making the label full owners. As President, Carter retained control of the Roc and his masters, ousting his 2 former partners.

Here are some of the most common reasons why business partnerships break up + tips to avoid partnership demise.

Unequal work

Most people want to have equal results without putting in equal work in this society. All partnerships go through periods where one person contributes—their time, money, energy, or other resources—less than the others. That’s normal. When it happens over a long period or becomes a pattern, resentment can set in and the other partners can begin to feel taken for granted. Unequal contributions can be addressed but all partners need to discuss the situation and develop a realistic plan for ensuring the disparity doesn’t become an insurmountable problem.

Lack of hunger

Having drive and motivation are important elements for any business to work. Do you and your partner have the hunger to make the collaboration work? If you're extremely hungry and your partner is not, you could end up having resentment towards them and vice versa. Hunger levels will vary over time. Rarely do they match exactly in every moment, but it's important that they are relatively matched over the long haul. A long-term mismatch in hunger levels between two people is bound to lead to frustration and failure.

Your Partner is not Being Honest

There are areas of the business that one partner is aware of while others are not. Partners need to be aware that the information they get from their partner is honest. Also, partners need to accomplish a task. If trust dissipates, this will lead to major problems within the business. Jay Z and Dame Dash could not trust each other. Dame Dash was using record label money and putting it in his other business ventures behind Jay Z’s back. Dame Dash hired rapper Cameron without informing Jay Z. Jay Z ended up selling Roc-A-fella records to def jam for his masters of his first album behind Dame Dash’s back.

Partners Have Different Visions or Values

In Proverbs 129:18, Bible states “without a vision, the people will perish”. Business partners who don’t have a vision or have conflicting visions will not have a successful business. Having a mission statement and getting your staff to buy into the vision is very important. Try to find a compromise between you and your partner. Look for the areas of strength in each other's visions. Afterall, the ultimate goal is to grow the company.

Partners are not being transparent, especially when it comes to the money.

Whoever controls the money, holds the power. All too often, we hear about partners who siphon off funds and leave the remaining partner(s) with significant debts. This is a really big issue that can destroy the business.
